New member here. Recently bought 68 mustang coupe with 289. 2 barrel, ps, pb, auto, a/c. has new dual flowmaster exhaust and new 17" chrome wheels and tires. i need to do some work to it such as stiffer rear suspension. any thoughts on how to beef up the rear suspension? as it is now with a person in rear left rear wheel can scrub. also want to upgrade carb to a 4 barrel. and possibly a little hotter cam. here is my question what do you guys reccomend in the way of carb and intake and what about a cam? and the rear suspension. all suggestions greatly appreciated.

if you want a little hotter cam, the Edelbrock Performer 289 would be perfect for you. While you're getting that you could also get the matched Performer intake and carb and you'll be good to go. Alternatively for the intake, you could look at something like a Weiand Stealth but they're generally better if you're going with a Holley carb since that's ultimately what they're set up for.

Regarding the rear suspension, you could upgrade to some stiffer, 5 leaf springs and polyurethane spring bushings.

What size tires are on the car and what is the backspacing of the 17" rims? If the tires are scrubbing on the sidewall it means that they stick out too far, either the bacspacing is too shallow (less than 3.75" generally causes rub, so 4"-4.25" works best it seems) or the PO put too wide a profile tire on.

If the leafs are shot the tire may be going up into the fenderwell, new leafs will fix that but won't fix the issue if the tires stick out too far.

CompCams has a free program call CamQuest you can download. Plug in all your numbers and it'll suggest cams for your setup, it's a good start and you can change a couple things and see what it does to the cam suggestions. It all works as a package.
