I have a 68 c code coupe equiped with power steering. The pump has bad seals and is completely dry, so of course its not working. I have been driving it anyway just using arm strength. Only problem is there is a large dead spot, or play, in the steering. I have heard that this is because the p/s valve isnt operating. Will replacing the pump solve the problem, or will I have to repair more of the p/s system? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

rag joint

Have you checked the condition of your rag joint (flex coupling)? I am currently going through that repair because I had a large amount of play in my steering, checked the joint, and noticed it was pretty clearly disintegrating. A repair kit costs $10 and the job isn't hard.

Check your steering gear box. There is a screw on top with a nut to hold it in place. This is adjustable and can tighten up the steering. My front end felt like it was floating. I just did this yesterday and it made a huge difference.
