1969 heater stuck on defrost

Hello.

I have a 1969 Candy Red convertible I bought last week. The heater control seems to be stuck on defrost. So much so that a p.o. bent the heck out of the control lever. I have done a lot of searching but can't seem to find a solution to my problem.

I have taken the dash apart and have straightened out the heater control arm.

After removing the defrost and floor heating conduits I have exposed the heater box with the door that moves to change from defrost to floor heater. When the door is in the full defrost position it is very difficult to move back from there. It is not the cable as I have disconnected that and the door is still extremely difficult to move from the full defrost position. However, once is has started to move from there it seems to move ok.

I have tried to clean the inside of the box as best I can but to no avail.

Does anyone know of an easy fix for this? Do I have to replace the unit? (I am not really excited about that).

Thanks for any info.

is it cable or vacuum operated.

you need to remove the cable or vacuum pod to check it.

if it is still sticky i have used silicone spray. it might smell a bit when it gets hot and i did not read the label regarding how many types of cancer you can get it you breathe the fumes.

if it has vacuum pods you need to get a small hand vacuum pump and check all the pods. if they leak you can but new ones.

check the vacuum can in the engine bay.

check the white plastic valve in the front of the heater box it it has one. it is closed one way and should leak vacuum the other way.

Hello. :) There are a couple of things that can cause that to happen. The most common is that hinge of that door has gotten rusty or has an accumulation of crud that makes it get stuck in one position. Or, it could be that door got a little bent somehow. I would first try disconnecting the cable, spray the hinge with some PB Blaster, and swing it back and forth a bunch, and repeat that process a whole bunch of times to see if that freed it up. Since you are the one that has the car sitting right in front of him, you'll need to move the door very slowly and watch to see what it is getting stuck on. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I have come to the consensus that the rubber seal on the door is not flexible anymore.

I am going to bite the bullet and remove and rebuild the whole box and be done with it. I will replace the heater core as well. Not fun but hopefully I will never have to do it again.

I thought about trying to shoot some silicone lube in there, or another person suggested lithium grease but I am afraid that these may be temporary fixes and just help accumulate dust and grime.

hello;

i would find a new seal first.
suggestion

Replace heater plenum for about $15- $20.00 from most Mustang suppliers.

Easy to do and inexpensive.

Sorry about that, I read as 67. My glasses playing tricks on me again... Oh well that must be a sign of getting old..
