1969 Mach 1 passing gear rod? Should it be attached?

Hi everyone... again.

You may have seen other threads of mine. I just bought this Mach & I'm trying to learn as much as I can before doing anything. When I bought the car last week, I didn't realize that there was a part on the carb that was un-attached. After doing some searching on this site & looking at some pics of engines, I think I know what it is. I believe it is called the Passing Gear Rod, or something like that...

It was not attached to the carb linkage, but it was just sitting there freely. It is a bent metal tube with a flattened end that looks like it attaches to the carb. The linkage is kinda bent up as well.

I am going to take a pic & post it so someone can verify this for me. (I'm still waiting for my diagram books to arrive so I don't have any referrence.)

Does it need to be attached? How does it work? I am confused why the seller would leave this off, unless it was an accident.

Doesnt have to be attached, its called a "Kick down cable/rod" works for when you floor the gass, the trans downshifts. It helps you pass those slow people. But it isnt "NEEDED" but is great to have. Is that a aftermarket carb? If so it doesnt have the hook up so thats why the seller didnt put it on.

Lol... That makes sense then why he didn't have it attached. It is an aftermarket Holly... looks pretty old. I had planned on upgrading anyways. I will make sure it is attached. So the kick down rod actually down shifts the tranny?
Doesnt look like it could handle that kind of pressure to me. This keeps getting better & better...:headscratch:

Thanks for the info Stirling.
I appreciate the help.

You can goto a local auto shop and get a kit to hook the bar up. And dont worry it can handle it dont be afraid to step on it, if you incontrol then your not having enough fun
