I have a 69 Mach 1 with a 351W I recently purchased. This car was in a barn since 1978 and is stock. I was able to get it running with 95,000 miles on it. I pulled the carb (had Pony Carbs rebuild it), valve covers and intake manifold. I noticed one rod was loose with about a 1/4 inch of play and the rocker tightened all the way. When the engine ran I didn't notice an noises or chatter. Is this a concern? I was hoping to get some use out of the engine before replacing it.

Thanks

Yes, 1/4" of play on a pushrod is a real problem ? Things to check are;

1. Is the push rod the same length as the others ?
2. Is the lifter or cam lobe shot ? ( with valve cover off, pull the coil wire and have someone crank it over. Look at the rise and fall of the rod to see if it has the same stroke as the others)
3. Is the valve bent and not closing all the way leaving the rocker arm loose ?
4. Inspect the rocker arm for damage
5. Check the height of the rocker stud to see if is the same height as the others (These are most likely push in studs and one may have pulled out)

A 1/4" of play in the push rod is a serious problem and not one to be taken lightly

Good Luck
