I am rebuilding a 1970 coupe and am trying to make it hold up and last. Would a 8.8" rear end handle a 429 modified to put out around 500hp? or would it be better to do a 9" swap to be on the safe side?

To be on the safe side and only do it once, I'd go with a good 9". It's not just the HP but the torque that thing would put out.

Thank you Dave, we assumed that would be the right thing, but it is always better to know. We are learning the ups and downs of a complete rebuild but enjoy it none the less. What would be the best recommendation for the gear ratio 3:55? going to use a C-6 auto.

Well it comes down your usage and tire size. With that motor usually lets you run a higher gear for road crusing. Just lot of things to consider.

thank you both, we decided to go with the 9" based on HP and budget. We have a 70 Torino with a 9" but it will need some modifications to fit. We will just hit a few friends up local to get a closer fit. For the gears we are not looking to cruise this one but get challenged :gringreen a few times to have some fun, so we want quick thrust and can handle the "some" highway driving. :yup:
