My 71 has an FMX transmission and stock shifter. I have searched the database and this must be just too easy a question...

In the past several weeks the tranny has started to pop into Neutral from Drive. Occasionally I need to slam the shifter into Drive several times for it to engage.

I crawled under and disengaged the tranny linkage from the shifter (easy). I have put the tranny in Park and secured the shifter linkage then put it in Drive and secured the linkage. Either way it is not happy. When I set the tranny for Park, I have to slam it into Drive. When I set it for Drive, it pops out of Park.

Question: Do I now start splitting the difference in millimeters and find a tolerable middle ground or am I missing something? I could always settle on throwing out an anchor or tie it to a street lamp?

Thanks folks:)

Pax...Rob

Thanks Heavy Metal...I have new bushings in. There is no side-to-side slop and no real forward-backward slop either. I just crawled under the car again...same story...great grab in Drive and I can literally push the car while it is in Park. Sigh!
