Hey everyone!

Looking for some info or a direction to find out some info. We have a 73 Mach 1 and we are getting ready to give it a fresh coat of paint. We ran the VIN and found out it has a Q code for the engine which come to find out is a Cobra jet. (news to us!) Anyho... We would like to find out how many 351 CJ was produced in 1973. Called that Marti Auto guy and they was RUUUUUDDDDEEE. Said that they didnt make a CJ that year and that if they did it would be on the report... The report that we paid 50 bucks for!!! that says nothing about a Cobra Jet. However all my research keeps turning to the fact that the Q in the Vin# identifies it as a Cobra jet.... Can anyone help!!!!

Mach 1 CJ for 73

Yes indeed they did make a 1973 Mach 1 351 CJ and the Q code identifies your 'Stang as one of those. Some were T-5 units that went to Europe. Mine went over and came back from an Oriental area of the world.
Why am I so sure? As you may guess I own one of the 73 Mach 1 351 CJ units with the original Hurst top-loader (4-speed manual), matching # engine, A/C, P/S, & P/B. And -- yes -- the folks @ Marti's can be rude :sterb: because they only do history searches for $$$ -- the more you want to know, the more the $$$ as in up to $200.
I was lucky in that I even have the original build sheet from under the rear seat. The car, by the way, was not a "cream-puff" but had lived a hard life before I restored her. Ford can do a 999 for you for basic history and accessories from the factory for your car.:wavey
Don't let anyone tell you that you do not have a CJ -- it may not be a 428 or 429 CJ or SCJ, and the horsepower is way down due to Federal Emission regs -- but the 351 "Q" code is indeed a CJ engine. If I can help any other way, or if you want some more info -- "pm" me and I'll send what other details I have.:winks

I also own a 73 Mach 1 with the CJ. I didn't know it until I had it rebuilt when the guy noticed to 4 bolt main he asked a ford specialist. Due to the fact he never seen one like it to find out what kind. Sure enough it was a Cobra Jet. I did some research to find out how many of them were produced at least as a Mach 1 they made about 40,000+.

If memory serves me correctly, Ford dropped the CJ off the air cleaner decal in 73.

The 72 (Same emissions motor) had 351 CJ right on the decal, and the lid was Chrome.

Lid in 73 was painted with 351 4V.

Having restored several of these I''m fairly sure this was the case.

Numbers?? Can't tell you at all about the Coupes, and Fastbacks, but do know The Convertibles with 351 4V, 4 Speed, there was 292 made. VERY rare car.

Yes, we have one, FOR SALE.

Just to add a little more info. According to Mustangs Monthly of the 25,274 Coupes produced in 1973, 548 were Q Codes (one of which I own) again making this model rare also. :bigthumbsup

1971 was the LAST year for the CJ in any form................it ws replaced by a Q code, 351C................H.O.
Wrong,

The 72 HO Motor was the detuned Boss 351.

The CJ was carried on in 72 as a still furture detuned 351C (Open Camber heads).

This same motor was used in 73, as CJ.

The Decal of CJ on the Air Cleaner was drop in mid 73 to just 351 4V.

A Q Code is still a desired piece, even though they are not fast as the Quenched Chambered heads.
