1973 Strut Rod Removal

851 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Scotty O
Hi all,

I'm working on restoring a 73 coupe with a cobbed in 429. I have the sucker stripped down except for a few stubborn pieces of hardware and the strut rods. Is there a trick to removing these? The nut is buried in the lower radiator support and the biggest deep socket I have is 1 inch, but that's too small. The bushings are cracked/rotted and need replacement. Now keep in mind, I have the technical know-how of a brain dead circus chimp, but I'm muddling just fine. While I have you on the hook, any suggestions on complete motor mount replacement. CJ pony parts has a kit that is 400 bucks which is a little steep, any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for all your help!

The strut rod i have no clue on but shop around for 71 429 motor mounts they will fit and probably cheaper else where.
I'd just go to the tool or auto parts store and buy an individual deep well socket of the size you need.
I have done those before, they are a lot of fun :) Make sure you get an impact socket, you dont want to see what happens when a regular socket explodes in an impact gun. Also the two bolts that are on the other end of the strut rod should be taken off first. That way it will relieve the tension off the bar. Remember this is the bar that keeps the front suspension from moving right to left. If the front end has ever hit a curb and had to be realined it could be under tension. I have a 60 gal air compressor and had to turn the air flow all the way to max to bust them loose with my impact. These also are one of the lowest points on the front end of the car. Therefore also sustain damage from curbs, rocks, ect. If the threads are stripped, or the bar is mangled to the point you dont think the nut will unscrew. It might be easier to torch them off and replace them with new ones.
Thanks...

Thanks for the advice....I went and bought a breaker bar and a 1 inch deep socket and have been lubing the crap out of it for over a week.....we'll see if I can knock this beast off of its jack stands.
