Okay, before you trash me for owning a 2.3L, this forum gets way more views and this could probably help other early Fox Body owners as well. My questions are pretty standard to all 79-82s; I believe? If you would like this moved that's no problem. I just figured it may help others as well as it's not unique to 2.3s, but all early foxes; and I could find better help here.

I scoured the internet and wasn't able to find anything. I just started DDing my 79 Mustang again after sitting for a couple years (I did frequently start it) after I got into some trouble, and due to my daily car having catastrophic failure. My turbo project never came to fruition which really sucks, but my 79 is now getting a new lease on life; and some standard things need to be straightened out to make it comfortable as a DDer again. Anyways, my 79 has a speaker in the middle of the dash, where the amp is for later models, due to it being an early Fox Body and not having door speakers. My current sound system and radio don't work at all. I'm looking to replace most of the sound system. I want to start somewhat fresh, because the person before me made an absolute mess of the sound wiring; and to make matters worse, after sitting the vintage aftermarket graphic equalizer fell from under the dash and got Lucas transmission gunk in it. I want as much as possible gutted.

Anyways, I cannot find this speaker size anywhere. I know the two side speakers are 3.5" and thought I might have heard this middle one is 6.5" but can't find that forsure. I do know the "grill" which is essentially just cracking holes in the dash is 7", but the speaker underneath seems it may be oval. It's hard to tell through the grill. Due to the wiring being a total mess, not having much money, me being on an ignition interlock device where if the battery dies I lose my license (seriously), and not being able to find a wiring harness; I was going to buy all the equipment at a reasonable price then take it somewhere to get it professionally get installed. Electrical isn't my bag. The problem as I said, is the center dash speaker size. Does anyone know it's size?

Second question, is there anyway to aesthetically fix the cracking speaker grills without buying a whole new dash pad? I was thinking of buying speaker covers and screwing them into the dash, or getting a carpet dash mat, but I am worried about the speaker sound going the dash mat route. I know this is a long post, but if anyone has any information I would be extremely appreciative! I could not find any answers to these questions, and have been looking for days.

Bonus question, is there any easy reason both the temp and gas gauge would stop working at the same time? I can figure reasons for them not working on their own, but not both together. They worked before it sat, but now they are not working. If worse comes to worst I'll just put in an aftermarket temp gauge. Now that I think about it, all the wiring in this car is a mess.

Based on your post, I would suggest that you take it to a car stereo shop and have them give you an estimate on what you want to be done. Then make an appointment at Best Buy to get another estimate.
If you had any experience with car stereo, I would have suggested that you remove the center speaker and Grill, take the measurement and go online to find replacements.
Good Luck with your project.
