Hello everyone. I'm in desperate need to find a solution to a problem. You see, I have an 85 5.0L HO that I'm putting in my 81. Since my 81 has rack steering and no longer needs emission testing, I would like to remove the power steering pump and smog pump. Do I need a special kit? How do I route the belt? I've attached a diagram to show you my currect configuration. Remember, I have to maintain the same direction of belt travel in order for the water pump to work correctly. I've spent hours searching, but haven't found an answer yet. Thanks for your help!
i don't think you can properly route the belt without the power steering pump. i would say you should get a standard rotation water pump and and find a 6-rib water pump pulley and then just run the belt crank-waterpump-idler-alternator like a v-belt. or you could just convert it to a v-belt, that could be easier
You can get an auxiliary tensioner pulley to take the place of the power steering pump, and route it that way. March makes several kits, check out their site.
