i have 87 gt it will start then die immediatly. i have checked the ign. module checks out fine i have 12v on term 3 on plug that plugs into tfi. I have found that the stator is being rubbed by the vane is this normal. i have always been under the impression that the vane passes thru the stator without touching. do you think the stator is bad causing it to fire and stall immediatly

I agree, it shouldn't be touching. Why is it acting this way?

I don't know if this is still accurate but the solenoid has a hot wire for the ignition. When you are cranking the voltage drops so there is a bypass wire that gives the ignition full power. When the solenoid is no longer being powered, after it starts and you turn the key to run. the power is then supposed to come from another source. That's the way it was in the old days. If this is true for your vehicle there will be a two large wires on the solenoid. One from the battery and one two the starter. The two smaller wires. One from the key switch and the other to the ignition. Unplug one of the smaller wires. If it doesn't crank plug it back in and unplug the other. Now it should crank and not start. If it does start your problem is else where. If it cranks and doesn't start there is a break in the hot line for your ignition. I would take a good hard look at the TFI module on the distributor. Hell they are cheap enough just replace the TFI module and see if it works. You do need a special tool to replace one but they are cheap.
