I'm having problems with my speedometer. It worked when I drove the car to calibrate it, but hasn't moved from 0 mph since. It utilizes a hall effect 3 wire sender instead of a cable. Tested the sender by hand, pulses just fine. Reconnected to the harness without putting it in the trans and turned the drive gear by hand, the speedo worked just fine. Put it all back together and drove around, still sat on 0 mph. That said, I have no clue about transmissions, but through my tests it seems that is where the problem lies. Anybody know how to find the source/how to fix? hopefully without pulling the transmission out... Thanks in advance folks
Hmmm, every 88 I have seen was cable drive, gear on out output shaft held on by spring clip spins gear on speedo cable or cruise control sensor, cable spins flying magnet inside speedo head which in turn causes the needle to float into a calibrated spot. Have seen the clips come off which will let the gears free wheel, There are two different gear lengths, sometimes that causes problems, you didn't mention auto or stick, if it's a stick most pre 88's had the seven tooth gear, the autos were usually seven tooth if the car was ordered with 3.27's if it was an auto with 2.73's it could have an 8 tooth. Pretty easy stuff, perhaps you have something aftermarket?
Yea sorry for not mentioning it. Stick shift, got an electronic sending unit to work with the gauge I got. It worked fine when I first got it and calibrated the speedo on the road, but now it's messing up. From the test I did, it seems the problem is maybe the nylon gear in the trans, but I'm not sure
