Does a 1988 GT have a rev limiter? if so at what RPM should it hit?
this is speed density, so no maf, unless you ment MAP?i think the 02's can do this and the maf sensor some on here would know more
Yeah that is what the maf does, but mustangs didn't have them till 89. i did put a new throttle position sensor on it today, and i think that fixed the idle problem and it doesn't smell rich anymore. so the old one must have been sending some really bad readings, and it was dumping too much fuel...na i ment maf. i thaught the maf regulates the amount of fuel to dump in the system based on how much air is being metered in intake
The factory rev limiter is 6250. The rev limiter you need depends on your engine combo.
the rev limiter is there ....if you are basing that on the factory tachi have a 88LX with a 5.0 and i have spun the motor to about 6300 and i got out of it but it didnt seem to hit a rev limiter there
"Stock" '87-'92 Mustang's peak horsepower is @ 4000 RPM. Absolutely no reason to go past that point. You won't make any more power doing so. Torque peaked @ 3000 RPM.
So damn glad that this thread exists.
I've had my LX 5.0 for only two months (she's 19 years old with 202,000 miles), and it's my first one. I never rev it past 4,800 - you know, because that's where the yellow starts on the tach. what the heck did i know?
So, tonight, after putting in a 13 hour work day, i'm driving out of the office and the crappy-crapola floormat gets stuck on the accelerator and revs the hell out of the engine as i'm shifting from 1st to 2nd.
As the engine roars and the tach needle swings up to 7,000, I shut the engine off. But alas, I think I am too late. The damn tach needle swung ALL THE WAY AROUND!
I toss the floormat into the backseat (to be dealt with later) and cautiously fire up the engine. no warning lights. that's a good sign. I slooooowly cruise to the nearest gas station, pop the hood, smell the dipstick, check underneath for giant oil puddles.
All seems OK. I then jump on the 405 and drive home the 40 miles to Redondo Beach.
From what I've read here tonight, I think she's gonna be OK and I might even be able to get to sleep soon.
In all of your collective experiences, what, if anything, needs to be repaired or replaced after this? new plugs? Timing chain? or am I really going to be OK?
