every car/engine has a rev limiter you rev to much you can seriously screw the engine up. But about the 5.0 i was with my buddy he had it to around 6200 but his car wasnt stock id say 5700-6000 for a stock 5.0

The factory rev limiter is 6250. The rev limiter you need depends on your engine combo.

i was just looking for what the factory set it to, as i get shut down at 5k, but now today on my way to work with it, it wont idle anymore, its really rough and wont stay running, so i think somting is wrong now. smells really rich...
could the O2's do this?

i think the 02's can do this and the maf sensor some on here would know more

na i ment maf. i thaught the maf regulates the amount of fuel to dump in the system based on how much air is being metered in intake

Yeah that is what the maf does, but mustangs didn't have them till 89. i did put a new throttle position sensor on it today, and i think that fixed the idle problem and it doesn't smell rich anymore. so the old one must have been sending some really bad readings, and it was dumping too much fuel...

ah my bad.. forgot about that. well im happy you atleast fixed your problem :bigthumbsup keep up the good work man

the rev limiter is there ....if you are basing that on the factory tach

there could lie the problem you did not get to 6250 rpm

where the limiter is set.....

factory tach's have been know to be off as much 200 rpm

just curious why if the car is basicly stock did you spin it up to "6300 rpm"

usable power is in the 5500 - 5700 rpm range.....

"Stock" '87-'92 Mustang's peak horsepower is @ 4000 RPM. Absolutely no reason to go past that point. You won't make any more power doing so. Torque peaked @ 3000 RPM.

I was in 2nd gear and in it hard but that was on an autometer with a recall. it was 6300 according to the recall but its very possibley wrong..

but thanks 4 the info guys. there is no reason tho spin it past where the power curve drops..

Yeah, but if you shift at the peak horsepower rpm, it will put you that much further away from the power rpm in the next gear. Usually when you shift at redline the next gear puts it right where it makes peak power.

But there's a point of diminishing return. Shifting at over 2000 RPM above where peak HP is made will surely drop your ET some. I could see maybe 500 or 600 RPM or so.

So Damn Glad!

So damn glad that this thread exists.
I've had my LX 5.0 for only two months (she's 19 years old with 202,000 miles), and it's my first one. I never rev it past 4,800 - you know, because that's where the yellow starts on the tach. what the heck did i know?
So, tonight, after putting in a 13 hour work day, i'm driving out of the office and the crappy-crapola floormat gets stuck on the accelerator and revs the hell out of the engine as i'm shifting from 1st to 2nd.
As the engine roars and the tach needle swings up to 7,000, I shut the engine off. But alas, I think I am too late. The damn tach needle swung ALL THE WAY AROUND!
I toss the floormat into the backseat (to be dealt with later) and cautiously fire up the engine. no warning lights. that's a good sign. I slooooowly cruise to the nearest gas station, pop the hood, smell the dipstick, check underneath for giant oil puddles.
All seems OK. I then jump on the 405 and drive home the 40 miles to Redondo Beach.

From what I've read here tonight, I think she's gonna be OK and I might even be able to get to sleep soon.

In all of your collective experiences, what, if anything, needs to be repaired or replaced after this? new plugs? Timing chain? or am I really going to be OK?

you are going to be just fine ......the factory tach made it look worst than it was....if you wern't aware the computer has a rev limiter built in .....will not let the motor over rev past 6250 rpm

so all is good ...
