1988 Mustang Lx Surging problem

800 Views 7 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  stangem91
I have installed a autometer water temp gauge cause the stock unit went out in my 88 LX. I put the sending unit thats autometer supplied in the stock place and just dissconnected the original sending unit from the harness. when i got it all intalled i started the car and you could tell it was running rich and at an idle it was surging between 4oo to 1000 rpm. So I Plugged the stock unit back in and it stopped. How Do I get rid of the stock sending unit without having the surging problem.. Thanks

The coolant temp sensor goes to the computer. I doubt you can replace it with a universal unit. I believe what Masshole is trying to tell you is you switched the wrong item. Replace the temperature sending unit with the Autometer one on the lower intake and leave the coolant temp sensor alone.
There are 2 sensors/senders for the coolant. One that goes to the gauge and one that goes to the computer. You took out the computer one, which made the car run like poo. You need to change out the gauge one. I haven't looked on mine to see where it is but from what Masshole said it's on the lower intake somewhere. Change that one out with the Autometer sender. It will look like this-
