Replaced the alternator and battery but alt still isn't charging batt. I noticed there was a 14GA green wire not hooked up to anything(coming from alt plug). I pulled up a diagram and it says it should be plugged into the solenoid. Is this correct? If so, which bolt on solenoid do I attach it to?? I tried hooking it up to the bolt that has wire leading to battery and the voltmeter on dash spiked to about 13 from 8, BUT the wire got really hot......is that normal?? Thanks in advance

What color is it. I can look on mine and find out. Actually will have to look at my old one under the workbench. I went to 3G but I can still find out. Maurice

Green with looks like a purpleish color. Goes into body wiring.

It is definitely not a 1g that has separtor regulator.

Wiring diagram for it.

What a 2g looks like. That is what I think is stock on the 89

I am pretty sure the 89 is a 2g alternator. Wiring diagram for it.

3G definitely what you are not stock. What it looks like.

Notice a common point. Light green with red goes to the gauge.
Hope that helps. Start looking for a small cut green wiring that should reach that is in body harness. Maurice.
If that does not do it. I can take picture of my alternator and harness to show everything.

ok so it is a 14Ga fuse link? I have two different diagrams, one showing 12 Ga and the other 14Ga. Which one is it? I'm only asking again because the fuse link is really hot when its plugged in. Thanks again

If those get real hot. Which they should not. Might want to take alternator back and retest. I went thru 4 "rebuilt" alternator from Ad----- Auto Parts in 2 years. One of them the pulley came off and destroyed my hoodliner. Was on my 4th and time for it to go. Over 6months old. So I installed a 3G. My point is because it is rebuilt doesn't mean it is good. Might want to take somewhere where you did not buy and have them test it. And see what they say. Then if test bad. Go back to purchaser and go for it. And confirmed black/orange go to post on starter solinoid with battery cable. On the 89 the only thing on the other big post is cable to starter. Maurice

Pictures of my old 89 alternator. About the ground. You should have a big ground going from body to motor. Unsure where it is. I will look for it. I am putting my 89 t back together. Needed tuneup. I get too hot I come in here and check on the forum. Kentucky been having some hot humid days. Over 100 Heat indexes. Will see if I see it and let you know. Maurice
Edit looked at my main ground. Big cable and a smaller cable at the battery. Split at the battery connection. The small wire goes to the body. The larger cable goes around the power steering lines. If I remember correct when I put motor in it goes to a bolt stud and ground goes there and grounds to the motor.

Ford alernators are one of those misterys that are really not bad to solve. Now if the alt you purchased is in fact GOOD and it does not charge a fiew things must be checked.

1 Heavy battery feeds Some have TWO. Is their 12 volts their all the TIME??
2 I terminal (indicator Alt light) when key is in run position engine off. Does the alt light come on?? If not do this tst. test it with a regular test light. From groung alligator clip on ground probe the I terminal. Does the alt light on dash illuminate ?????
3 S terminal jumps from 3 wire plug to single wire plug on alt (stator)
4 A Terminal goes to full 12 volts even with the ignition OFF Is 12 volts THEIR????

If you have all these things the alt should charge if its a good UNIT and your belt is tight and not slipping . Peace Tom
