Hi, I have a 1989 5.0 H.O mustang, the only real modifications to this car are a cold air intake and under drive pulley. But my problem is that while driving the other day it made a very loud pop, which was a backfire I assume, and then basically my engine died. The car from there will turn over but without pumping the accelerator it will die, but there is no idle, you pump the accelerator and it goes from almost dead to about 4,000 rpms. Once it jumps to the 4k rpms, it backfires again and dies.. I have replaced the cap and rotor, checked the distributor module, and looked for vacuum leaks, but I cannot find anything that stands out to be wrong. Also, timing has been mentioned to be wrong, but I was driving in a neighborhood in only second gear, so i wasn’t driving it very hard for it to somehow miss timing.
Any suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance

Check the rotor while you crank it. Also, find TDC on the compression stroke, and see if the rotor is pointing to the number one plug tower on the cap.

It's either timing related, or a vacuum leak.

#1 is the cylinder at the front of the engine on the passenger side.
