Hello i have recently purchased a 1989 mustang gt with t-tops, car runs strong and i love it but i have heard that production of t-tops ended in 88. the title and vin seems to match my car but the code on the data tag on the door says it came with a sun roof. i can find no weld marks of the t-tops being after market. as far as i can tell it is an 89 mustang gt with factory t-tops. i was wondering if anyone can help me out with an explanation on if this is possible, and if not how i can tell if its after market tops or vin fraud.

any help will be greatly appreciated as im going crazy trying to figure out if 89 fox bodys can have factory t-tops, and if they did what code would be on the door.

What was the build date? If it was an early 1989 it might have t-tops.

An '89 GT with a T-roof is NOT factory. Then you have a door sticker than says the car came with a sunroof.

Either somebody added the T-roof after it left the Dearborn assembly plant or the car is really not an '89 GT but has swapped VIN(s) and title from an '89 GT

Factory T-roof = "D" code under the "S" (sunroof) column on the door sticker AND "TR" code on the metal tag stapled to the frame behind the driver-side headlamp.

Like Fox said, 1989 models didn't come with T tops. It's either an 89 with aftermarket T tops or someone switched VIN numbers to make it an 89.

Look for all the VIN stickers on the fenders, hood, hatch, and bumpers. You should be able to find at least one to match up with the VIN tag on the dash. If not then you have a lot of possibilities...recovered stolen at some point, or a rebuilt '89 car using the shell of an 87/88. You also have the possibility someone cut the roof off at the factory weld points and welded a new T-top roof on. If they were skilled you would not be able to tell the difference from factory and custom.
Early 88 was the last of the T-tops, and very few were made. '87 was the last full year for T-tops.

You could run a CarFax report on the VIN to see if there were any problems with the VIN such as accident or theft. 88 was the last year for T-tops and very few were made. What is the DSO on your car? If it was a Detroit DSO, it's possible that someone could have taken it to Cars and Concepts, who did the T-top conversion for Ford, and had T-tops installed.

i have done a car fax on the car and found that it had been salvaged and restored so most likely using an 88s frame for t-tops? all tags match each other and the car down to the T except for the sunroof so my only guess would be that the car was wrecked and worked on very well? thanks very much for the help i appreciate it

Last year of the T Top was in 88. Either someone switched the tags or someone may have even swapped the body.
