1989 mustang not starting.. with a good battery

952 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  roadrunner_taz
the motor runs fine.. i just put a brand new battery in it..it starts the first couple times.. but turns over real slow. or doesn't start at all after that... it will start fine if i jump start it.. but other than that. it wont start.. could it be a bad ground? or could the alternator be draining the battery?... i also have a bad ignition tumbler.. and most likely a bad ignition switch. since the 89's had a recall on that... but this wouldn't be draining my battery in such a short amount of time would it?

Have you ever replaced the alternator? I know that in my 89GT and all my friends fox body mustangs the Alternator always goes out. I replaced the ignition switch on mine too. There are also some good posts on here about ground wire replacement. Check your battery cables, I replaced those, all pretty easy do it your-self jobs.

I know this is going to sound stupid, but make TOTALLY sure that your battery cables are well hooked up. And I dont mean like the terminal connector to the post, I mean the cables in it. I thought my car was totally screwed and it turned out to be something as simple as my ground cables had a bad connection so you would get power in the car until you tried to start, at which point it would just die. If that doesn't work, try checking the grounds near the timing chain and just below the battery. And I thought the recall was so the ignition didn't light on fire...

yea. the alternator was replaced in 07.. but i took the battery out today. and put it in another car. and the brand new battery is drained completely, so that narrowed it down to something to do with the battery.. Could a bad alternator drain a battery this fast, like, within an hour?

Have you checked your starter. If you can take the starter off and go to a parts store and have it tested.
