1989 Mustang Rack n Pinion Change

745 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  sheldon54
I need to replace the Rack n Pinion. It's power steering and the seals are gone. I drove it dry until my forearms go tried. But really only a few times I lost all power steering.
Questions are as follows;
1. Should I replace the power steering pump?
2. My Tie Ends just had the ball joints replaced, do I need to buy new ones?
3. Should I go with AutoZone Rack n Pinion?
4. Should I buy new hoses even if there is no leak from them.

I have read up on how to remove and replace the Rack n Pinion. If I don't buy a new power steering pump I need to bleed it to flash the pump.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Personally if the pump is still good I would
leave it, but I would replace the tie rod ends.
Replacing the lines is a judgment call. If the
rack from autozone is remanufactured then I
would pass it up. You can pick up a new
one for around $200.

thanks, that what I was thinking. But I will have to wait until it's all back together and see if it whines. I hope not.
