I have a 1990 mustang 5.0 that just recently started to misfire under mid range rpms. The strange thing is that it can be driven fine for sometime but then other times at mid range rpms it starts misfiring and sputtering. When this happens, sometimes we can shut off the car and restart it and this problem goes away until the car is shut off. What can be the problem?

How do I check if the egr is one giving me the problem?

Too ambiguous a question because there's too many things it could be.

Need to know more.
Is the car stock? Modified?
How long has this been happening?
Happen only after it warms up? How about when it's cold?
Does the tach jump around when it shouldn't?

The car has boltons and it starts misfiring when its cold as well as when its warm. The thing we have noticed is that when it decides to misfire the check engine light goes on and goes away when the backfing stops. It recently started acting up.
