Ok, I have a 1993 2.3L Automatic Conv, and its got 232k (So I was told- Runs like a champ and doesn't burn a drop of oil).

I was getting some intermittent Codes (186-172) a couple months ago and which verified it was running lean so I changed the fuel filter and a tensioner and pulley that had failed.

The new fuel filter seemed to help for a couple weeks since it wasn't pushing codes and it wasn't hesitating as much... but the last few days its been pushing codes pretty often so I pulled them and here's what I got.

KOEO
172-Heated O2 Sensor/HEGO Sensor Indicates Lean Right Side
181-Fuel system still lean at richest adaptive limit during part throttle
186-Injector Pulse Wider than expected
223-Loss of dual Plug Inhibit Control
224-Erratic IDM input to processor

KOER
116-ECT out of self test range 0.3 to 3.7 volts.
411-Cannot control rpm during KOER low RPM check

Basically I am hoping that someone can help me figure out where I should be looking in order to fix these problems and if these problems point to a larger more specific problem. Hopefully I am making sense- its been a long day. :blink:

I'm not sure if its related/valid to the discussion but I do have some trans issues lol. It slips at lower gears and doesn't like going up major hills in the lower gears after it warms up. but with some lucas transfix it works fine for me as a daily driver- you just gotta know how to drive her.:bigthumbsup

Ok the bulk of your problems is a lean condition. So check for the following. Vacuum leak low fuel preasure clogged injectors ETC. Once you nail this you will have the bulk of your codes GONE. Basically the engine is lean. I would just change the ECT with a good ford one. The IDM is an RPM signal from the coil to pin 4 of the ECM and is controlled by a resistor(2.2K) in the circuit . It comes from the coil packs which you said you also have a code for. So i would fix the coil trouble and that in turn will fix the IDM problem. Does the TACH WORK?? If you have one ?? Good luck.

Yes the Standard tach works fine. What particular vac lines should I be checking? I think that the vac system must be part of the problem since I my climate control is defaulting to floor/defrost despite what its set to...

Whats the easiest way to determine if my injectors are getting clogged...?

Check your fuel pressure also. Pump may be going.
Slightly OT but, I want to check my fuel pressure on my 2.3 na also. The problem I have is that my gauge fits the larger valves like on gm and dodge. It wont fit the smaller valve like on my mustang, windstar, and sable. Is there an adapter for this?

Someone told me that if I didn't warm up the car before doing the KOER Test (which i didn't) that could cause the ECT Code... Do you think that could have been the problem? Also I haven't ever cleared the codes by disconnecting the battery for 20 mins in the 2.5 years I have had it... Do you think I should and that perhaps the lean codes might have been because of the bad fuel filter that I changed and perhaps they are still in the CEL memory?
