I have a 1995 manual 3.8 V6 and the harmonic balancer broke off. So after taking the timing cover off to access the harmonic balancer sleeve that was still attached to the crank shaft I noticed that 2 teeth on the cam shaft synchronizer were broke. I ordered and replaced the gear got everything put back together following instructions I found on here and now it will not strart up. It cranks over freely and engine rumbles a little but dose not fire up. The car did sit for 8 months as I was researching how to fix it and trying to find the parts I needed. Any suggestions as to why its not starting? Anything anyone can think of that I could try? Was wondering if I could try using starter fluid?

FWIIW, the cam sensor isn't normally a "no start" sensor. In other words, a bad cam sensor will not prevent the motor from starting. For verification, disconnect the cam sensor and try again.

It would seem more likely to me that something happened to the CKP sensor with the balancer broke.. The CKP is a "no start" senor.

But... Have you verified spark? Do this before trying starter fluid.

Of course this could be a fuel injector problem from stale gas. If so, then the motor will start on starter fluid. Just don't use too much.

Here's some more information regarding a crank with no start symptom.

Yes I have verified that it is getting spark. It will occasionally back fire when attempting to start. I tried unhooking the cam sensor and same result will crank sputter a little back fire occasionally but no start

Tried adding more gas to the tank and injector cleaner and sprayed a little starter fluid in intake and would kinda start up. Now when I turn the key it dose not crank and all I hear is the starter spinning. What would this mean? Did I burn out the starter by cranking it but if so would I still hear it spinning? The engine is not locked up as I can manually crank it with a breaker bar. Should I replace the starter?
