I just recently baught a old 1997 mustang gt 4.6, I want to beat a 2001 mustang gt there both automatics, I cannot get traction off take off an I would like to be able to smoke him for under a thousand the car is a daily driver except winters. I know I need plugs wires K&N FIPK new fuel filter and I need a cooling fan not sure if that would make a difference or not but other then that i'm not sure what else I could do to beat him for under a grand I heard of changing the intake an heads to the 1999-2004 style but i'm not sure if that will be in my budget. I can do all the work myself with some help I just need some more ideas I was also thinking about getting 4:10 gears and pullys I'm running 225-60-16s on front an back with the stock 16 inch rims, I'm wondering what size tires I could put on to get better traction thanks

one of the best ways to get traction is to get aftermarket upper and lower rear control arms. they make a huge difference in the "bite", without them everything else pretty much won't help
With an auto and the HP it has, hooking up shouldn't be an issue unless you have crappy rear tires or just floor it off the line. If you can check out ebay for all the used PI upgrade, it will make a difference. If not, I would atleast get better rear tires and some rear gears. When you get a little more money, i would then work on some suspension and some other bolt ons.
Or, just get a nice used nitrous wet kit and some tires. Use the 75 shot.

I like the nos idea how hard are they to hook up an hkw long would it take?
well it's my opinion that you put your ego aside and build the suspension first, yeah it's not glamorous but a solid foundation is the best starting point for any performance minded car...
