I just bout a 97 4.6 stang for 600 bucks that was getting water in the cylinders! 2,3,7,8 to be exact! can't figure out why, i've torn it down and all is good! i know the guy who had it, he was hard on it, but is still a sound car! i've decided to drop a used motor out a wrecked car in it! I wanna get a lil more out of it and scared of the block cuz he was rough on it! So i read that a 01 motor (pi) is more hp! what years will fit? what parts will i need? computer? things of that sort! what is not compatible with my 97! i've found a couple motors around 750$ that come with everthing assembled even alternator! i would be open to any suggestions and appreciate any advice! thanks

Do you plan on doing the work yourself? What model year and car did the donor motor come from?

FWIIW, most any modular 4.6 will fit in your Mustang. However, some swaps makes more sense than others given a choice.

In a nutshell when doing a PI swap keep the original ignition, electrical, induction, fuel system, and exhaust.

This is important! Keep the original PCM. If you follow these recommendations, no tune required.

The exact list of what's needed will depend upon the MY of the original and donor. But none of the issues are difficult to overcome. Tons of ppl have done it.

Recommend new motor mounts.

If you need a copy of the Ford Service manual, I may be able to help. PM if interested.

Get a PI Romeo motor from:
2001+ Mustang, Crown Vic, Grand Marquis, Town Car.

It's is possible to swap in a PI Windsor from a 99-00 Mustang. However, then you will have to deal with changing the flywheel/flexplate.

By retaining the electrical from the original car, those problems are avoided. The original harness is easily swapped. Same for the ignition, induction, acc, and exhaust.

If you choose to use a non Mustang, consider swapping the oil pan to retain the larger capacity. If your car has an oil level sensor, this will retain that feature.

The heater return is different. Recommend getting a return from a 99-01 Mustang. If possible, get one with the restrictor.

The PCV line is larger on the late model cars. Either swap the valve covers, swap TB's, or switch to a 2001+ TB.
