1998 4.6L fuel pump

I need to replace my fuel pump and dont really want to go with the motorcraft pump. I spoke to the guys at BBK about thier pumps and they said that ford changed thier pumps to returnless in mid 1998. so i would have to find out what pump i had does anyone have anymore info on should be done? I know that its easy enough to find out what type of system i have by looking at the fuel rail, but has anyone changed the pump to somthing other than a ford pump on their 1998 4.6L?
