Change your filter and give it a good treatment of Seafoam. It worked really well with mine when I had the same problem.So I have a 1998 GT that has been having a hard time starting lately. It will crank for several seconds before almost sputtering to life. I read a suggestion that replacement plugs would help. I replaced those and they did need to be replaced, but the issue persists. So now I am trying to replace the fuel filter but the thing will not disconnect from the fuel line.
I have read several articles on how to change it, and watched a few videos as well. No one else seems to have a stuck one. I am going to try getting a fuel line disconnect tool today to see if that helps, but any advice on wither problem would be appreciated.
If replacing the filter doesn't work, the only other thing I can think of would be the weak battery, but it has never caused starting problems in the past, it just can't stay on without the car being on for more than a few minutes before dying. Again thank you in advance for any help you can give.

Get the disconnect tool and use the one that fits the fittings on the filter. I can not remember which size it is but you need it so just buy the tool. When you do this disconnect the inertia switch in the trunk start car let it idle (if it will idle). Once the fuel or most of it is run out of the system then remove the filter. Once the filter is out blow through the end that goes towards the motor (opposite of the arrow flow). See what the fuel looks like that comes out. You can always cut the filter open also and check it out.

+1 on a new fuel filter. Cover the basic maintenance first.
Try this. Cycle the ignition key several times on/pause/off without cranking. LISTEN for the fuel pump to run each time.
Now crank the motor. Does this improve starting? If so, suspect fuel pressure leak down.

Sorry just wanted to update the thread in case anyone else has this problem. I replaced the fuel filter and that helped a bit, but it turns out the fuel pump is going out. If I cycle it a couple of times before actually starting it then it works, but it still has trouble accelerating. I am going to get a new one and replace it. I'll let you know if that completely fixes it. I sure hope it does.
