ok i receantly got this 98 gt40p headed mercury mountaineer 5.0l. well i have a few question about it. in the lifter vally in stead of the normal dog bones and spyder retainer in most 5.0l ho's. it has these plactic box type retainers. well my question is were these used because they started to use up all the remaining push rod blocks ford had... or was it just cheeper to use the plastic ones instead of the steel ones. or were the blocks the old non roller style and ford just slaped those plastic retainers in to retro fit the roller cam and lifters into the older style block.. i am just on a quest to retro fit a roller cam and rockers into a non roller 351w. so far i have a ported set of gt40x heads,b303 cam, steel gear for distributor, dubble roller timing chain, and fresh rebuilt 351w short block. i am wanting to build a mild 351w for my 95 mustang. so if anyone has any info in the 5.0l mercury motor and those lifter guides in a 351w let me know thanks
