looking for a place to start. My 1998 mustang V6 has backfired a couple of times in the past, and stutered off and on a few times, but just recently won't idle. I can start it up and if I keep it reved about 2,000 rpm it will stay running, but if I take my foot off it will die. The old pony has about 230,000 miles on her but was running great up to this point.

Any suggestions of where to start would be greatly appreciated.

Probably wouldn't hurt to clean the MAF, IAC, and the throttle body.

...have you ever looked at the IAC?

The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is a stepper motor-driven, vacuum leak.

I was pulling Windstar intakes at the junk yard last weekend. Some of IAC's on them were carbon-ed up completely.

Yuck.

Then again, run (or better, replace) the vacuum hoses. How often is it the easiest thing anyway? ;-)
