I drive a 1999 Manual V6 (3.8L) mustang, I have been starting my car up, and there has been this weird noise when i start the car. It doesn't continue after the car is started, and from what i can tell, hasn't affected the cars ability to drive smoothly (yet?). Some people I talked to said its probably my starter. Or maybe my flywheel. How do I tell? and what do i do?

zing (repetitive) noise, like something is spinning, and making contact with something, high pitched, towards front of engine bay. It doesn't make the noise after my car has warmed up though... if it does make the noise, it is more quiet and quick, than when its cold. It stopped for about the last three weeks, and now its back. Happens so quick, i can't really for sure say where the noise is coming from, but it is towards the front of the engine bay

That noise coming from the front of the engine is possibly the camshaft position sensor, I just had to deal with that a couple weeks ago, if you want to find out let her cool off take off the serpentine engine belt and start it, if it still makes a noise with the engine belt off that would be the problem, I was told the noise is sometimes mistaken for the water pump going out and running it for a little while without the belt on takes out that possibility

When mine went out it was fast, I started it made a high pitched noise and when idling it made a lot of noise, but once I got goin down the road it stopped, it tried to die on me once pulling into the driveway, all in two days I garaged it because it scared me when it tried to die

Also this could be connected to your mileage issue you talked about in your other thread, mine dropped some when this was going on

so it makes a high pitched zing noise only when cool and first start up of day. Then its fine once your running. It came and went away for a few weeks. Im going to say from what you explained your starter isnt fully engaging, and the teeth are just touching the fly wheel making the sound, or the gear cant kick out like its supposed to and the starter motor is just spinning making the zing noise. Once your car is warmed up the starter is also brought up in temp letting the key engage fully and the gear lock in good with the fly wheel. I would try what David said, that will take about 20 mins to remove belt and put back on. Then get starter tested. Keep in mind your starter could work just fine outside car. Good news is a stater is fairly cheap and easy to swap out.

Oh yeah, also check your battery. Age and if its putting out under a load the constant voltage required. Low voltage is a nasty cause of all kinds of issues, and they may start/turn the car over fine, but the starting system needs the required voltage to start properly.

My car has made this noise for 2 years. I believe it is the bearings in the starter at the beginning of failure. After 2 years mine has gotten no better or worse, but it only happens when it is under 32F and the car has sat for a long time.
