1999 Mustang GT 5 speed shifter is stuck in reverse.
I shifted my transmission to reverse and now it will not shift out of reverse. Clutch works fine. No indication of transmission problems before this event. I removed the shifter and tried to manually disengage from reverse but this does not work. Tried with the engine running and off to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

After market Hurst shifter
I installed an aftermarket Hurst shifter about a year ago with no problems untill now. I have removed the shifter and tried to disengage reverse manually using a screw driver and wrench, with and without the clutch engaged or the car running.Hey Steve welcome to AFM! Is it an aftermarket shifter or a stock unit? Give us some more info and maybe we can help. I'm also going to move this to the 4.6 Tech section and see if we can get you some more answers.
That sounds bad. Could be a number of things, but it's likely internal in the trans. If you have the old stock shifter try that and see if it makes a difference. Also make sure the little cup that the shifter sticks into is there and not broken. If its not the shifter or the little cup you can try forcing it out, but it sounds like the trans may need to come out. Hopefully Richard will see this and chime in, or you can PM him, he's rj886, and he's the wizard for manual trans.
hi, I just bought a 99 gt yesterday, had the same problem last night, backing out of my driveway and when i tried to go forward i couldnt shift out of reverse.. so i called the guy and he told me to just hold the clutch in and push it backwards. well it popped out of reverse.. he didnt mention that before the sale and when asked if he knew about that problem of course he said no, but he sure knew how to get it unstuck o_0
