my mustang still has its times where it loses alot of power while driving its a on an off issue. sometimes when i try to take off i can hardly go then it finally kicks in so tonight i decided to check to spark on all 8 plugs and the front coil which the wires go to the right side of the engine all have spark while the back coil only one wire had spark while the other 3 had nothing. i changed the wires couple months ago along with the plugs. is the coil actually bad or could it be something else? codes while running came up with 998 and 224. mustang is a 1993

the codes are:
224-erratic ignition diagnostic moniter (idm) imput to processer
998-hard fault present

i'm not sure what that means exactly, when it comes to electronics, i just pull off parts suspected of being bad and have them tested till i find the busted one. someone should chime in with some better advise.

Without the second coil packs working the engine is excessively retarded on ignition timing. You must get that coil pack working. Change the controller along with the coil packs. NOTE 90% of the time the coil is ok but you only have spark on one plug??? this is strange being the system is Waste spark?????

As Tom said, I don't know how you could have spark on one wire only, since it takes two wires to complete the circuit. try swapping the coil positions to see if it's bad. But it may not start at all with them swapped since it's suppposed to start on the right side plugs, then go to both when running.

thanks for the help guys i ended up changing one coil first and i gained spark on one more plug but 2 weren't working still so had to change the icm and cel light went off and tach is back to normal.

i do have another problem now though sometimes when i'm driving the car will just shut off and wont restart untill a couple minutes later could this be the crank sensor?
