hey all

I am thinking about changing gears in my 2013 GT from the stock 3.15 to 3.73....and have a few questions:

Is it worth it?
Can someone please tell me what parts I will need? AM site is kinda confusing...
I talked to my dealership and if I have them done there they said it wil not void warranty HOWEVER they wanted $600...OUCH!

I have read through various threads on this but I am still confused...

ALSO...is the BOSS 302 intake with CAI and tuner that AM sells worth the investment, time and money? Dealer was reasonable on this $250..

Any and all thoughts by my fellow Stang owners welcome...I am new to all these mods but the more time I spend on here....the urge is killing me.

Thanks,

Bob

Damn, what is this, Gearswap Day? Yes, OP, the swap is worth it! Personally, I like the 3.55's. Don't let the stealership rob you of $600. Look around your area, and find a performance shop or some reputable shop who will charge MUCH less. Here in good ol' Southern IL, aka BFE, I had mine done for about $200. If you get gears, might as well get the install kit, too. AM is great and will walk you through it. If you're serious, now would be a great time to add an aluminum diff cover. Then you can change the gear oil in the future (the stock cover is weaker, and has no drain/fill holes). Have fun...JD

im guessing u have 3.15s becuz u have an auto. well the get ready to piss ur pants when u install 3.73s becus the difference in 0-75 acceleration is crazy!!! but also be ready to take a 3-4 mpg hit, because the gears will lower ur gas mileage. also u will need a tuner to change the ecu settings to the new gears

If you daily the car, the gears are probably not worth it. I have the 3.55s and I know I would go nuts with the 3.73s.

BOSS 302 CAI and a tuner for $250? Did I read that right? What planet is this on? Is shipping from said planet free?

thanks for the advice...i know the dealership was a rip..but I can't find a reputable shop here it Northern Illinois..I'd rather go to a place with recommendations than just blind trust someone with my baby.

Like I said in my last post, if it is a DD I wouldn't bother, especially if you can't trust someone to do the work.

You shouldn't pay more than 4-450 for the gear install. Then again, if they say it won't void your warranty for any future problems it may be worth it. Plus you'll build a good rapport with your dealer and they'll be familiar with your car (meaning they may forgive certain mods in the future if things go wrong. :bigthumbsup)

But to answer your question, 3.73s are spectacular on the auto 5.0! One of the best mods I've done to date. In fact, I did exactly what you're doing. 3.73s and a BOSS mani all in one hit. Only paid 200 for the BOSS install. I was out the door for like $625 after taxes for the entire install (i supplied all parts).

Either get the gear/tuner combo, or the BOSS/tuner combo. Because a custom tune will be needed after these mods and you need an SCT. Be sure to buy the install kit as well as a new pinion bearing ($50). Not advised to reuse the stocker.

Wait another month or 2 and AM will likely have killer discount deals for the holidays. Good luck!

Update

Well...I just wanted to update you all on what I did...

I did have the 3.73 gears put in, just the drop in K&N air filter and bought a procal tuner...paid about $500 (labor) to have it done, I know that's steep, but you can't put a price on trust and considering what I paid for the car...you get the picture...

anyhow..WOW, what a difference, the car launches like crazy and is unbelievable when you hit that vertical pedal on the right. CRAZY!!!

I'm glad I pulled the trigger...for anyoneon the fence, DO IT! You won't be disappointed.

Now, i just need to save for the next mod...I've comes to realize that modding my Mustang is like getting a tattoo...can't get\do just one!!!!!

Glad you like the 3.73's, as far as the Boss intake, I watched the install video, and it looked easier than changing the oil

I'm stil rocking the stock 373's in my 2012 but my old 97 GT, I had an auburn pro limited slip differential (AMAZING BTW) and FRPP 4.10 gears (automatic transmission) and I loved that gear ratio. Absolutely perfect match with the gearing of the 4R70W transmission and FRPP aluminum drive shaft.

Strangely, I got better gas mileage with the 4.10's than I did with the 3.55's I had in it before them. I did a lot of commuting and CONSISTENTLY got an extra 30~35 miles out of a tank.

IMO the 3:73's are not a good idea in an auto. It makes the car have to shift an additional time in the 1/4 mile, and hurts mpg's, also will kill the top end of the car if you do highway runs. Most auto guys who I have spoke to say to keep the 3:15's as the extra shift hurts, and there are many, many auto's with 3:15's running deep into the 11's with just basic bolt-on's.

But if you just like to run stop light to stop light you might like them. :bigthumbsup
