2000 GT Fuel Issue - Pump Stops then starts

870 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  stevew01
Any ideas here ?

The ignition is turned on and the fuel pump runs for about 1 second. I check the fuel rail and no pressure.

I can get the engine to start by squirting a little fuel into the plenum, then flooring the accelerator. The engine will catch and cough but will eventually start. Recheck the fuel rail and there is pressure now.

It repeats this if the engine is stopped for more than a few seconds. If I restart immediately it starts, otherwise have to reprime.

I know that flooring the accelerator kills the injector pulses, so letting off allows the injectors to fire. Just cant figure out why there is no pressure on initial start attempt if the pump starts but only runs for 1 second.

TIA

Change fuel pump. You have a weak fuel pump based off of issue you are describing it is losing pressure off as the vehicle is off so it isnt holding and maintaining pressure in the system when the car is off.
FWIIW, for the 99-04 MY the fuel pump is only supposed to run for a few seconds at initial key on. It turns off by design. The FP then runs when the PCM sees that the motor has actually started.

+1 on above. Assuming that the fuel filter isn't clogged........
OK I understand the above answers and thanks.

It's confusing though , that there is no initial fuel pressure at first start. Fuel pressure does come up after starting.

I'm data logging and it definitely shows the fuel coming on after start but zero at key on. I get a good 43 to 48 psi at run.

On a GM you get fuel pressure at key on.

And as I said , car will not start cold unless accelerator is floored. Weird. Found out that didn't have to squirt any fuel into the plenum , just floor it. It coughs and spits but will start as long as the battery is hot :)

Fuel pump was removed and strainer replaced by previous owner, also replaced filter. However , the fuel gauge is not working and i get a code circuit is open. DTC9202.

Any more thoughts would be appreciated. I'm willing to replace the FP if necessary, just puzzles me that I get good pressure after car starts.

Thanks !

Oh yeah, I know I read it somewhere, just cant remember where about the fact that the pump only runs for 1 second at key on. The answer to this is out there somewhere I just can't remember where to find it.

BTW found out PATS was tuned out on the PCM.

^^^Likely this means that the fuel system isn't holding pressure between starts. The usual reasons are:
  • Leaking fuel injectors.
  • Leaking fuel pump check valve
  • leaking fuel pressure sensor (return-less) regularator (return).

Try this. Cycle the key on/pause/off several times WITHOUT cranking. If this improves starting, suspect fuel pressure leak down.

I'm going to have to fess up on this one.

I originally inspected the IFS and expected to see the red button up.

Since it was down in the recess , i barely pushed on it and nothing happened.

And Since the newbie to Ford is in me I was not sure about how that switch operated. So I re-checked, this time I used a blunt rod and pushed down on the red button. I heard what I thought was a plastic type crack.

Car Starts.

Hey I'm happy !

On to more stuff the PO left for me, like half a dozen connectors not hooked to anything. I'LL be posting more soon,

Thanks to all.

Fuel pressure leak down is what Id say is your issue that is what I was talking about with your fuel pump most likely being bad.
