So we just changed the intake manifold on my friends 2000 Mustang GT. It was the stock manifold, and only recently developed a crack after 24 years with 141k. We had to go with a Dorman manifold since the Ford PI intake is almost impossible to find now without backordering. After the install, it seems to run great. I was worried about it losing HP since it's a regular Dorman PI intake, but we didn't notice a performance drop. If anything, it seems to run better, I assumed because of random vacuum or air leaks from the old manifold.

My question, since this was a 2000, it was using the previous all plastic manifold. I know they changed the design in 2001, to include the aluminum runner and increased airflow. Since the 2000 had the PI heads, but was using the old style intake, was the Dorman actually an improvement in airflow over the stock all plastic 96-00 design?

Also, what improvements were made to the 2001 4.6L to produce 320 hp @ 6,000 RPM, vs the 2000 4.6L with 260 hp @ 5,250 rpm? I know they improved the intake, possibly exhaust and other internals? Thanks in advance.

The 2001 4.6 2V still only makes 260 HP. Perhaps you were looking at the numbers for the 4.6 4V which was offered in the SVT Cobra. There's no performance difference between an all-plastic PI intake manifold and a PI intake manifold with the aluminum coolant crossover. From what I understand the performance reduction of a Dorman intake wouldn't be something you could feel on the butt dyno.

Back in the old days, yes there were a few finishing type issues with the Dorman unit but those have been long gone....and the intakes are of excellent quality. I personally take my dremel and remove any residual casting flash to make the intake runners smooth. The OEM's don't really look at this and honestly, I'm sure it does make a bit of difference but only at high rpm.

No problem. If this makes you feel any better, the new Ford Performance PI intake is actually based on the intake runner design on the Dorman unit. 🤷‍♂️

oh man, kind of, but why is it in stock now, lol! I gave up finding the Ford part. The one thing we notice after changing the intake, is it seems to run hotter. It runs good, but it's noticeably hotter in the cabin. We're thinking of trying a lower temp therm, but we used the one that came with the Dorman unit.

That's great to hear the positive feedback on the new Ford performance Pi my 2000 Gt 4.6L with 105 thousand miles still had the stock Pi and ran great till the Crack. I have to wait until Spring to see how she runs here in Ohio. Happy Holidays
