The headlights on my mustang are clean but the lighting is crap, I can't see much at night. Do you have any recommendations for good bulbs? I have been looking at conversion kits but I read with a HID conversion kit without projectors I dont want to go around blinding people. Is there an alternative or what is the right way to do it? What does a relay kit do? I prefer using some good bulbs instead of altering the wiring but I am not sure if that will fix my problem as crappy lights seems to be a thing on these cars.

I have read that Luminics H13s are good, is this true?

Thanks

Sounds like the inside reflectors may have deteriorated.......swapping out bulbs, etc. will really not provide any benefit because the light housing MUST be designed for the type of bulb being used..... check the condition of the reflectors, they might be able to be restored very easily! If not, avoid aftermarket assemblies like the plague... QA is terrible

The headlight assembly is crystal clear as if the previous owner replaced the two headlights with brand new ones. I checked and saw there are LED lights in there already. Maybe the headlights need adjustment or the orientation is messed up? When I turn on high beams it doesn’t make much difference at all. I can barely notice the high beams.

that is all a possibility....they might be aftermarket units which are typically junk. It's also not just the lense, but the reflector design

I think they are aftermarket. Will check but this is what they look like pretty much

I would still think I’ll be able see the high beams turn on and make a good difference from inside the car but it barely makes any difference to lighting up the road.

I bought new headlights and bulbs for my ‘95 and it’s still pretty dim.
I think the problem is that we’re comparing our “old” style lighting to the mega bright modern stuff. My Daily drivers’ headlights are a nite and day difference (pun intended) than my 25 year old mustang. My mustangs lights aren’t 25 years old but it’s 25 year old halogen technology.

I have driven other older cars with halogen lights and there’s definitely a difference, at least I could tell a difference with high beams with my other old cars. The lights on this mustang really are bad I think.

The small narrow reflector size is the weakness of these headlights. Even when my mom's '99 was new they had poor light output. I've tried several aftermarket sets on it. The worst was a set of projector style. If it wasn't parked in front of a wall, I couldn't even tell the high beams were on. The other thing is the poor quality of materials, especially the low grade rubber used on the upper trim. That said, I installed these factory style SVE Mustang Headlight Kit (99-00) - LMR.com lights a year ago and they have been great so far.

These are my bad boys...

I have my stock headlight housings and put these LEDs in and it's much better. I can tell when I hit high beams too. A little bit of a pain to install you have to take a ring of the light off and put the light through the locking ring of the headlight housing then put the light bulb ring back on and then you can install it in the housing. I also discovered the aim was way off on one of mine once I had a bright light in it.

On my 99 Mustang, I first went one step up on the Sylvania headlight ladder, it made a huge difference, without too much sacrifice in lifespan. Next time I went up another notch, not much difference, both to me had a longer reach out front, the 2nd level bulb may provide more illumination to the side. On either bulb, I can't imagine being any brighter would be any benefit, they have a long beam - not sure next time if I will go down one level to the bulb one notch above standard, or stay with the 2nd notch bulb - they both are huge improvements over standard.

I have the HID bulb kit from Diode Dynamics in my stock headlamp housings (I bought brand-new OEM Ford headlights about 3 years ago), and they are FANTASTIC! They throw out, at least it seems to me, TONS more light in front of the car, and I think I see way better at night. The one downside is they're pricey - I think I paid $189 for the kit, which includes the bulb; (a small) ballast, and all wiring. Everything just plugs together, and then plugs into the 9007 bulb connector, so there's no cutting out splicing of the vehicle's wiring necessary, and you can get the bulbs in 4 or 5 different color temperatures, ranging from a yellowish that resembles a halogen bulb, to a bluish-white (I got just one step closer to white, from the yellowish halogen, because I didn't want them to look too different from what the car had originally). The other thing about them is there's virtually zero difference between hi/low beams, but honestly, the low beams are so bright, I don't even feel the need for the high beams.

I have a Roush Stage 3 (I think that's what it is) front bumper cover, which uses the same round fog lamp housings the 03/04 Cobras used, and those lamps use an H10 bulb. I got a matching HID H10 bulb kit from Diode Dynamics for them, and I couldn't be happier with both!

By the way, in almost 3 years, I've never had one, single oncoming vehicle flash their lights at me (I aimed my new headlamps/HID bulbs when I installed them).

If you're looking for more light out in front of the car, I HIGHLY recommend these Diode Dynamics HID bulb kits!

Thank you for this! I will have a look at those, I was avoiding HIDs because I thought you needed to splice wires and they blind others.

Are you talking about the Ultra or Xtravision bulbs?

I have LEDs in my car right now. I don't know whats wrong but when I put the high beams on I have noticed that the headlights become dimmer but wider 😂 I tried to rotate the LED bulbs in the housing and now the right side headlight seems to be better but the left side is still bad.
