Hello everyone, its my first post on this forum and I can say it will not be the last as the wealth of knowledge here is awesome.

I have a problem with my 2000 Mustang GT;

A few months ago I got into my car, went to start it, but it would not turn over. The car would crank perfectly, the battery was fully charged it would just not turn over. I got it towed home, when it was unloaded, i tried to turn it on and it turned over. It has worked perfectly until a few weeks ago. I went to a movie but when I came back to my car it would not start just like before. I got the car towed home, but this time I wasn't so lucky and it wouldn't start. The car had less than 1/4 tank of fuel this time. While I was at work my father filled the car up in the garage from 1/4 to 3/4 using a jerry can. He came back after doing this and the car started. This was a week and a half ago. Today I started my car and pulled it into the garage to vacuum and wash the windows. When i tried to pull it out of the garage it did the same thing as all the other times. It would crank but it would not turn over. We replaced the fuel filter tonight in the car in about 30 minutes but that was clearly not affecting anything. The car has never struggled to start nor has it ever had trouble running. It always idles beautifully and never studders to a stop. Could this be a fuel pump issue? a relay switch issue?

Canadian Tire is quoting me approximately $400.00 for the fuel pump, which does seem slightly higher than a fuel filter.

If it is the fuel pump, would ordering this steeda fuel pump work? It is a 2000 Mustang GT.

I'm just really getting confused about what to do with it. I'm not able to drive it until it randomly starts again and I don't want to spend over $600.00 for the fuel pump and labor to put it in.

Also, if it was the fuel pump wouldn't I have noticed weird things while driving it for the last 4 months like it idling word or stalling etc...It maybe isnt either of these things?

welcome to the site,enjoy!!!! if you suspect a bad fuel pump,then do a fuel pressure test before you replace anything.

You had mentioned you had vacuumed your car did you happen to vaccum the trunk. If so you may have have bumped the fuel pump shutoff. It is an electrical sensor which acts like a circuit breaker push red button check electrical connection to be loose try to start. Im willing to bet this is your problem. Good Luck

Unfortunately, I wish this was the case, I've done some reading in the manuals and thought that infact this was the problem the first time. Sadly it was not. I also checked the fuel pump cutoff after it didn't start today but the red switch was still pushed in.

Hey Derek,get you a fuel pressure guage,most local parts stores have them...hook it up to the schrader valve on the fuel rail,turn key on and see what the pressure is.

Ford wants $100.00 just to check and see what the problem is. I'm going to grab a fuel pressure gauge later on today and test it. Is there a certain amount of PSI it should be reading for it to be ok?

If I check it and there is fuel pressure, where does that lead me? fuel pump relay?

I also spoke to Steeda this afternoon. If I test the electrical connection to the fuel pump and it is getting electricity it is probably the fuel pump gone bad. If I do not have any voltage to it with the Key On, then there may be a problem with the Fuel Pump Relay Switch.

Does anyone know where the fuel pump relay switch is on a 2000 mustang GT?

UPDATE: Checked the Shrader valve this afternoon with a screwdriver. There is fuel, and there is pressure. What else could it be? I'm getting confused.

it should have at least 40 psi of pressure,the best i remember.

It was electrical and it had something to do with the ignition. The computer wasn't registering the chips in both my keys. This is why it would not start. Nothing mechanical, purely electrical.

I find it interesting how a component that is created to save me money ends up costing me $500.00. Thanks ford.

I am having the same issue with my car. Did they change your Computer in your car or they just gave you new keys?

I think i have same problem

I recently changed my battery and now i'm not getting any fuel. This wasn't a problem before i changed the battery. I checked the switch in the trunk and its in the down position so i cant push it. Is this good or bad? I would have assumed the problem is related to this switch in some way. Until i read here about the key thing. I am going to go use both keys and see if the theft light is flashing or if i can learn anything more from that...

okay, its not the key. no theft light blinking. Due to the fact that it was working before i changed my battery i'm leaning towards the fact that its electrical/electronic in nature. I want to check the fuse/fuses first. Does the fuel pump have a fuse of its own? is there a fuse for the fuel pump shut off thing in the trunk? Are there any other fuses that could affect the fuel? The first thing i thought of was the fuel injection is electronic. the car hasnt moved in a month now, so i can't wait till spring, i dont want to drive it during winter, and i don't want it towed so im running out of options. Any ideas are appreciated.

Just changed battery out, turns over will not start....

Used both sets of keys...

Cut off switch, good (its down)

Went to the valve took cover off (right above injector passenger side) pushed the valve core down, replaced plastic valve cap.....

Turned the key ....and car started,:?: turned off, started right up again......now WTF???

Do I trust it, or dont wander to far away from the house? I thought when I fuel pump went out...it STAYS OUT? Thoughts?

45 minutes later...went to restart car..and wouldnt start...

took the cover off again pushed on the valve core and it started right up ....so what carry a nail around everywhere I go ...lol

Did you figure out what the real problem was? I'm going to try this on my 2000 3.8L Mustang. It occasionally doesn't start.
