2002 GT Ticking Noise. Help! (Video)

Hey guys im trying to figure out what this noise is. There is a ticking sound coming from my engine. if you look at the bottom pulley it seems like it is wobbling and vibrating but when the rpms get up to about 1100 rpm it stops. also when I roll my windows down all the way and continue to hold the button the ticking stops also. It seems that whenever there is extra draw on the alternator it stops because when i run the A/C the ticking goes away also. If you know what this is or if you know any way to help me diagnose this problem i would greatly appreciate it. here is the link to a video i took.

Have you tried to tightening down all the pullies?

It also looks like you have piggy back style under drive pullies...those can cause issues.

It seems pully related since load effects the noise.

Step one remove the belt and then start the car. If your ticking noise is still there then go buy a mechanic stethoscope at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts and have a friend start the car and you start listening for the noise. when you find out where the noise is the loudest then you will want to either remove the engine cover that is covering the noise or take it to a shop and have them look at it. When you get the belt off let us know if you still have noise or not.

I'm not sure on the torque specs. For the Crank Pulley, look up instructions on how to install Underdrive Pullies and you will find it there. the idler pullies are just tighten them pretty tight (not superman tight, but tight). Unsure on power steering. The alternator pulley, when I did my Underdrive pullies, was tightened with an impact as tight as I could get it...

Steve has good advice too...I would tighten the pullies first, since that's free. If it's still there, do what Steve suggest.

The accessory drag (turn on A/C) slows the engine rpm down a little bit and puts more load on the engine. It is very possible the noise you are getting is from the bottom end of the engine if that crank pully is moving that much. If it just started doing it and those pullies have been on the car awhile then I would rule those out. But the movement would be a concern. You could have some bad main bearings allowing the crankshaft to "walk" forward and backward in the main caps. If that is the case it would be a good time to decide if you want to prepare that engine for some serious boost and forge the bottom end or buy a used engine and drop in its place or rebuild back to stock. Let me know what you find out as I recently built my engine in my 03 convertible GT and can provide you with all torque specs and instructions.

If you want torque specs for crank pulley its as follows:
Step 1. tighten to 66 lb-ft
Step 2. loosen one full turn
Step 3. tighten to 37 lb-ft
Step 4. tighten additional 90 degrees.

Good luck.

Well yes the serpentine belt. By removing the belt you allow the engine to run for a few minutes no more than 3 minutes as no accessories will be turning. If you shut the care off before it starts to warm up it wont over heat and wont cause you any problems.

As far as the crank kit goes that kit you selected is for a 4 valve engine. Call Summit tech support and tell them what you are looking for they will give you some other items to look at and will be able to help you choosing a bottom end.

Haven't gotten a chance to take off the serpentine belt yet but just as an update, I changed my oil and there were no shavings in it. does that rule out anything?

Pull the belt, start the car, listen for the noise. If it make the noise without the belt then figure out where it's coming from in the motor. With the crank pulley moving like that you probably need main bearings at the minimum. With the belt off, can you grab the crank pulley and move it back and forth? Since it's a manual, if someone pushes in the clutch, does the crank move?

Just because you didn't find metal doesn't mean all is well.

I have almost the same sound when i turn on the AC and sometimes after hard traffic driving but it doesn´t change when i press the gas pedal as i heard in yours. I checked under my car and it appears to be from the tranny maybe my clutch still is misaligned due to a side accident.. Sorry i know is an old post but if you have not fix that yet or figure it out go try under ur car to see if u hear it there to.. if u see a lot of movement down there as i see in mine then u probably get an idea of what is happening. Hope this help!
