Gentlemen, have a black 2002 GT. The paint over all of the plastic pieces is coming off at an alarming rate. I needed some body work done and 2 of the 3 shops basically told me I have one of those "Ford paint jobs." Evidently, according to them some of the paint jobs from Ford during at least my 2002 model year were faulty. All of my paint over metal is fine, over plastic just going away.

Anyone else have this problem or heard of this? Car is waxed 3-4 times annually and garaged or covered about 1/2 the time. Ford of course blew me off, fat chance of a new 5.0 from me. Warm summers in Houston, but no ice, snow or salt. Thanks for the input.

As far as the "Ford paint job" thing goes, I can't say it's a very common issue. All manufacturers are subject to having a bad day though, I occasionally see cars less than 5 years old; Hondas, GM's, whatever -you name it, that are having paint issues. But as far as it being common for our cars or a given model year, no. Lots of people here with 02's not having this issue. I know you say that you keep it garaged, etc., but maybe the owner before you didn't keep it up so well. Could also just be poor prep at the factory that day. I dunno man, it's just one of those mysteries that might go unexplained.

You could always buy or rent all the crap to do it yourself; paint gun, air compressor, etc. and materials and save some money over what a shop would charge. It obviously won't be perfect since it's not what you do fpr a living but with a little practice it should come out alright and still be a hell of a lot better than what you have right now.

Or get a body shop to repaint the plastic pieces only if the whole car doesn't need a repaint. I think if painting the plastic parts, they put "flex' in it so the paint won't crack.

Cheaper than a new car, unless you can afford the payments for one with no sweat ......
