I have a 2002 Gt with a 5 speed Tremec 3650. It began to have first to second shift issues and I replaced it with a rebuilt unit. I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, etc. and had the flywheel machined to clean it up. For the first 3 weeks it shifted perfectly and I was very satisfied but it recently started to clunk going into fourth gear and sometimes even grinds just a little. When shifting down from fifth to fourth it grinds every time now. I was told that it is possibly a clutch adjustment issue and not a problem with the transmission. Any suggestions?

2002 TR 3650 issue

Thanks Neko,

This is the issue I had originally that caused me to replace the transmission. I Read on this forum about the concern and decided to replace it with a rebuilt unit.

Its a little unusual that 4th is giving you the trouble (whereas the lower gears are not). This leads me to believe it is a transmission issue, and you need to take it back. The rebuilt tranny should still be under warranty, if you move fast.

tr 3650

Tripleblack,

Thanks for the imput. I have talked to the rebuilder and he is willing to open it up and check it out so I don't have a problem with him at this point. I just want to make sure it's the tranny before I pull it out again.

Labor

Ah, so you are doing the labor yourself. Have you double checked the job you did, making sure there is no binding with the clutch cable and that the transmission is bolted up tight?

Does the transmission shift freely with the motor off?

TR 3650 issue

tripleblack and korky,

Thanks for the reply. The transmission shifts fine with the engine off and running sitting still. I checked to see that the clutch adjustment was full top and it seems to have plenty of clutch. The clutch disingages about a third of the way down and still has plenty of clutch before it hits the floor. At this point I am reasonably certain it is not a clutch issue. I can feel it into fourth gear with very little noise but it cannot be shifted from fifth to fourth without grinding no matter how I do it. Unfortunatly, it feels and sounds exactly like a synchronizer going out so I guess I'll just pull it back out. Practice makes perfect.

I believe they might help you or your tranny builder. Upgraded synchros are out there. Maybe your mechanic can talk to Keisler and get some new info.

Sorry for your pain. Get someone to help with the tranny - its heavier than the old T5!
