2003 Mustang GT 4.6L When do I need to replace my clutch? I currently have about 88,000 miles on the original stock clutch. The motor is stock and I'm not really having any problems with the stock clutch. Should I replace it anyway or wait for indications it's about ready to give up the ghost or would waiting for it to start to fail cause more wear and tear on the flywheel?

Honestly i would wait. If you ever happen to take the tranny or engine out for some reason, i would do it then. but if it works fine, i would leave it alone. When it starts slipping and so on is when i would change it.
I agree. your clutch should last well over 100,000 miles. I know mine has close to 150,000 now and it still grabs hard! But if you ever take you motor out or drop the tranny, that would be the time to do it. Just makes sense.
If it still grabs good, the pedal isn't hard as a rock, and the Pilot and TO bearings aren't whining at you there's no need to change it!
If it is not broke don't change it (simple rule)
last clutch i had was in a f250. the 1st slave unit went out little over 100k and the disk looked like new still. when i replaced the 3rd slave unit, little over 200k, i replaced the pressure plate and disk, but the disk still looked like new. it probably didnt need it, but like the other guys said, if your gonna drop the trans, thats the time to change stuff. of course, i wasnt racing the truck :winks i exploded a clutch disk in my 67, only took a few thousand miles :D

mine just got replaced at 158k.

i waited til the last second and goosed it, after the the clutch was making all these loud screeching noises and vibrating like mad lollll, then i got a new one and its got like 1k on it and rox.
Thanks guys!

Alright! Thanks for all the input. I also go by the rule, "If it aint broke, don't fix it." What I was concerned about was catching it before rivets got into the flywheel or something like that. However, the flywheel is reletively cheap and will need to be turned or replaced if and when I do the clutch anyway. Thanks again!
