2003 Mustang V6 Slip when give gas

962 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  wmburns
I have an 03 Mustang V6 base model and am having a slip issue that I'm not sure where it's coming from. Only during most turns, not all, I will slow down normally, make the turn, and about 75% into the turn, I will give it gas and the engine will just rev up and finally catch and lurch forward. At first I suspected a transmission problem but after talking with a few people, they suggested that since I have rear wheel drive, there should be some type of universal joint for my drive that may be worn out. Can someone tell me if they've have the same issue and what they did about it? This only happens after making a turn. I have never felt the slip while driving straight, slowing down for a stop light, then speeding back up. Only during/after a turn.

I'm thinking this is the piece worn out. Not a bad fix for $15 bucks and a couple beers. Anyone ever changed this?
Your post did not state if automatic or manual transmission.

If automatic, check the fluid level and condition. It is possible that it is low. When going around a turn, the pump pick up is being exposed when the low fluid shifts. This will starve the pump for fluid and slip will result. The "lurch" results when fluid is deep enough to re-cover the pick up and the pressure returns to normal.

OBTW, IMO it is not a U-joint problem. U-joints don't slip. They vibrate, click, or fail outright.

thats what id have said.. check fluid level
It's an auto tranny. I checked the fluid when it was hot yesterday and the fluid is fine. Could it be that the fluid is broken down causing the slip?
You did not state the condition of the fluid. So, at the risk of stating the obvious since you are looking at it, the first thing to check for any problem with an automatic transmission is the fluid. If it is not red and smells sweet, the pan should be dropped, cleaned and a new filter installed.

When the pan is dropped, that will tell the true story regarding the health of the transmission. Look for excessive amounts of friction material, bits of metal. I personally install an aftermarket drain plug in the pan to make future transmission service easier.
