Hi. forgive me if i've posted this wrong, or somewhere i'm not supposed to... I'm new here and trying to do things right.

i have a 05 GT and i had a shop put a pypes o/r X pipe on it. clamps, not welded. i noticed a slight rattle at idle, when the idle is at it's lowest. it will randomly start and stop, even if the idle doesnt really change. following the sound, which can be heard from inside and outside of the car, it seems to be coming from under the rear passenger side seat, or at least in that general area. i just bought and installed (myself) a new axleback exhaust, and i have noticed it's rattling a tiny bit more now. it sounds stupid and can be a bit embarrassing. So.. i'm assuming it's a part of the exhaust that isnt tightened up enough or something in the midpipe area. Any suggestions on what it could be or how I, as a poor college student, could lift the car to gain access to the problem? all i have is the stock jack really, and i know it's probably doable, but i hate using that jack. (anywhere to get cheap service ramps btw?) if i had to describe the sound I'd say that if you took a vibrator and duct taped a wrench to it, then held it on a metal exhaust pipe... that's about it. however, it hits slower.. like maybe 10 "rattles" a second
Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it.

NOTE: the rattle can very rarely be heard. i often make trips without ever hearing it. :bigthumbsup

do not get under the car and look for a loose pipe on that jack that came with the car, unless you have a death wish... never get under a car without jack stands

+1

At the very least find someone to borrow a floor jack from and even then you should use stands. I've also been known to pull the right or left side of a car up onto the curb to make some space in a pinch. Not exactly ideal but works. Even Wal-mart sells a decent set of jack stands cheap and you can jack up one side, put the stand in then do the other side.

As far as the rattling, check the rubber hangers that the midpipe slide into, some of them are a bit off and it could be stretching the rubber far enough that the hanger is vibrating on the metal mounting point that holds the rubber gromet. That happened with my o/r H from Summit. Good luck!

You might want to start by just giving your tailpipe a kick and see if you hear the noise. From there you should be able to pin point where it is coming from. Where the axle backs go over the rear axle/panhard bar area is usually very tight. this could where it is rattling as well. One last thing, there is a TSB for "Center Stack Rattle" that may or may not be what you are hearing, but would not hurt to check it out. The solution to the center stack rattle is to basically cut the the two mounting pins from the forward exhaust that fits into the trans mounting bracket. I did this on my car and it did remove a lot of exhaust harmonics throughout the whole car.

Never go under any vehicle without it being safely supported :nono:
