2005+ Mustang GT. Anyone using Steering Stops?

890 Views 12 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Alfaduetto
Has anyone changed steering stops on their GT? I am going from 17" wheels to 18" wheels. It says that I need to change them. It appears that it is just a bolt to unscrew and put another one in place. Is that the case? Any insight would be appreciated!

I've switched from 16 to 17 and 17 to 18 on 2 different cars and never installed them.
You didn't have any issues with rubbing?
I you do a search here you will find some have changed the bushing.

Nope didn't have any rubbing but then again never spent much time with the wheel cranked to the stop.
I had the issue on my 82 turbo Mustang (miss that car!). Wore holes right through the fender liners! Of course power sliding around corners with the wheels cocked didn't help much......:bigthumbsup
I'm running 255-45-18s without a bit of trouble.
When I went from the stock 16s to the 17x8 Bullitts I bought the steering stop. Looked like a nylon bushing to slip over the steering arm. I never got around to installing it, and now I've used 18s and 19s, also with no problems. I did hear a little rubbing in a tight parking situation, but couldn't find any evidence.

Yes. When I get out of the car "The Steering Stops". No Really, I have never heard of such a thing, what is it?

If you look at the FRPP site and browse the wheels, they have a disclaimer and give "stops" parts numbers with those that will be oversize on the original 16-inch fitments.

Maybe you need to change them out if you had 16" wheels as OEM.
If you don't have any rubbing issues don't worry about it. The stops are different for various wheel and height combos on the OEM steering rack. The stops are actually a plastic washer that sandwiches between the rack itself and the inner tierod swivel. If you were going to 2" lowered with 9.5 wheels it might be an issue, otherwise go fast.
