Hi, I'm kinda new to the forum. As I'm browing everyone's posts I've noticed a lot of people talking about new "Gears". Does that mean the actual gearbox, gear ratio, etc? Just curious. Thanks! :gringreen

Gears in the rear. V8 has 8 inch v6 has 7.5 inch

Stock for 05 - 06
Auto 3:31
5 speed 3:55

Stock for 07 -08
All 3:31
08 Bullit 3:73

The higher the gear number the quicker the acceleration, but also higher RPMs at speed.

So a 3:73 gear will be quicker then a 3:31 gear. But the 3:31 gear will have a lower RPM at the same speed and better MPG

Ford now has the 3:31 stock for better MPGs

Not all 5 speeds have the 3.55's some have the 3.31's as I have had a few come through the shop when I was changing them out.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have a better grasp now. But just to be sure, are we talking about final gear ratio?

I have an 07, came with 3:31.

05 and 06 5 speed came with 3:55. Ford made the 3:55 an option on all GT in 07 and 08. It was Standard on the 05 and 06 GT 5 speeds.

I was thinking about swapping my 3.55s for 3.73s--stock on Shelby GT and Bullitt--but I really like 1900 rpm at 80 mph on my commute every day...and getting 21 mpg. 373 would be nice though. Wish I had a bit more whiplash but I don't drag race.

You're not going to feel much going from 3.55 to 3.73. What else have you done to the car to get to 340/350? Or are those flywheel horsepower numbers?
