2005 GT.
When in first, second, and sometimes third you can hear a grinding that sounds like its coming from the transmission when you are around or below 500-750 RPM. The sound is most obvious in first and goes away as soon as you get above 750 or 1000 rpm. Anyone ever heard this? At first I wrote it off as regular tranny noise, but after installing the aftermarket shifter I realized I can hear it independently of the high pitched whine usually associated with our transmissions, the noise is much lower and definently sounds like grinding instead of whine. There is no trouble getting in gear, even when doing hard shifts. No other symptoms at all really, no feedback through the shifter or anything. Anyone know whats going on?

I wouldn't worry about it if the sound goes away above 750 RPM.
Mine does the same thing and I traced it back to some exhaust related "rattling noise".

If it would be a broken bearing or even a gear set going bad it would still be audible at higher RPM's.
Therefore if that "grinding" as you describe it would still occur at higher RPM's I woult take it to a dealership and have them a look at it.

Mine does it, like when you are in a parking lot and you are in 1st and the clutch is out all the way and you are going slow. or when you take off real easy and you hear it for just a second before you hit 1000 rpm or better.

My mechanic back home said he thought it might be the springs on the clutch making noise because of the low RPM and not to worry about it.

Sweet. Yah, it goes away by about 1100-1250 rpm. I figured it was probably something like that or I would at least feel some feedback through the shifter or feel notice some other symptoms. I think I have an exhaust leak as well, so I'll go through the whole system and check everything out in a few days.

On another note, holy sh!t, this tranny is LOUD! The gear whine is incredible now that I installed the MGW shifter. Not that much louder than stock, just enough so that it is now not completely drowned out by the exhaust. Under hard acceleration in second and third, it sounds like the tranny noise and exhaust note(stock exhaust) are fighting to dominate the cabin. I really dont mind it at all, I actually kind of like it. It reminds me of some of the race cars with straight cut gears.
Personally, I think this(at about 1:10) sounds amazing: BMW M3 GTR - Hans Joachim Stück - Nürburgring
(On another note, check out the video, its pretty sick. I think he gets air once or twice)

The only thing that bothers me is that the tranny and exhaust sound are so close to the same volume that they just mix into a garbled mess instead of one dominating the other. I would like if one or the other was a good bit louder than the other so you could easily distinguish between the two.
