2005 v6 gas mileage terrible?

1804 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  tractorman86
My 2005 v6 mustang's computer on the dash reads that I have only been getting 11 to 13 mpg. It has just over 100,000 miles on it.

Is this normal? I don't drive it on the highways often and when I am driving it's with light stop and go traffic. I also don't let my car idle for longs amounts of time and I reset the average mpg not long ago.

I average 20 in city driving 23 on highway and I let my car idle when I first start her to warm her up
I average 14-16 mpg with a lot of stop and go driving. Throw in a good amount of highway driving and the mileage will go into the low 20's. All highway I reached as high as 27 mpg. This is using the cars computer readings.
Don't trust the dash guage, as it can be extremely inaccurate.

I would run through a tank of gas and use the pen and paper method to see what your actual gas milage is.

^ This.

Just like Silver Stang above, I get about 20 city, 23 hiway. Which bangs in there with the epa estimate..

I use my '06 to commute to work in the good weather. It's 130 miles roundtrip, 95% highway. I'm getting close to 30 mpg but I realize that is not the norm and, like others have said, my computer may be off. Then again, my 4.0L SUV that I use in the winter gets 24 MPG. When you fill up as often as I do you tend to drive real conservatively. Mine is a 5 speed, so an automatic will do worse and city vs. highway is a big difference. Still, you're numbers seem low. I've been told that EPA estimates are low by about 2 MPG but a lot depends on how you drive it.

On 93 gas and a hybrid tune I'm getting 18-19mpg mixed driving and 25mpg highway. This is with 4.10 gears and an aluminum driveshaft. Since you just reset your mpg calculator, I'd run a tank of gas and see what the mpg ends up being. If it's still low You should consider a tune up.
In some city and some highway I was averaging 18.9 on a 93 race tune.
My 06 4.0 5-speed with just x-pipe/stock gt mufflers, screamin' demon coil and 8.2mm wires I get average 24.5-25.5 on 87 and 26-27 on 91, mixed highway and stop and go
