2008 V6 RPM Issue

1705 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  CarlowkillaG11
I did a full tune up to my 2008 V6 4.0L mustang not to long ago Including: oil change, new spark plugs, new filters, new brakes.

It started having an RPM issue. They seem to go out of control when i turn it on and quickly shoot up to about 3,000 when i barley touch the gas peddle, or shoot down until my baby dies on me. I had O'Reilly's do a computer check and have already replaced all the sensors that popped up like the Mass air flow, oxygen sensors, throttle body position sensor. I even cleaned out the throttle body!
I have no idea what else could be wrong with my baby and don't know where else to look. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thank you very much!

Make sure the air filter is correct. If this started when you changed all that, there could be an issue there. The symptoms you describe imply an intake change. Cleaning the maf sensor and throttle body usually solves those kinds of issues.

Are you getting any codes now? (engine light on)?
RPM Issue

I recently started having the same problem. if my car has been running and then i turn it off and turn it right back on my RPMs go a little haywire. jumping up and down between 500-1200 rpms

However the problem isn't consistent, when it is happening I've i just give her a good rev that fixes the idling problem sos.gif

After doing some research I'm leaning towards replacing the entire throttle body and putting in a new intake while i am at it.

Yes, it is showing the "Service Engine Soon", and the "Low tire pressure" lights. and it starts off jiggling from 1000 RPM to 1500 RPM so i punched the gas peddle a little (in neutral) and it wouldn't come down from over 2000 RPM, then started dropping beneath 1000 RPM and shaking!
I replaced the sensor inside the intake (I believe it is the mass air flow) and the sensor that is on the throttle body ( i think that is the TPS).

Do you think replacing the intake is what i should do? i don't think anything is wrong with the throttle body though.
Please help....

ohh and thank you so much for replying! i wasn't sure if anyone would... i really appreciate your help!
Throttle Body

From what I've read our its not uncommon for our throttle bodies to potentially start having problems after 50k miles. I'd try just clean it out really good first before you buy a new one ya know?

I'm replacing my this coming weekend, So I'll let you know how it goes.

I was thinking about this the other day. When ever you are in park or in gear either or, if you turn your steering wheel all the way in one direction until it stops, and then hold it there, do your RPM's drop then as well and cause shake?

I just noticed my was doing that and since our symptoms are so similar I was curious if your did that as well?

This past weekend I started by replacing my spark plugs and wiring, hoping that would fix the issue, unfortunately it did not.

I also told you I was going to replace the throttle body which I haven't gotten to yet, but still have intentions on doing so.

For now though, I'm going to carefully check out my powering steering pump to see if that could potentially be an issue, as I stated above.

Let me know if you have that symptom?

I haven't tried out the turning the steering wheel all the way in one direction yet, but next time it does that i will! i am taking it to a mechanic hopefully next monday, I will most definitely be supervising and helping him work on my car! I will let you know what we do to her. I actually did give the Throttle body and MAF sensor a really good cleaning prior to the problems beginning.

When i talked to the mechanic he said it could possibly be Electrical since the first symptom i got was that the A/C only blew hot air and not cold air.
I changed the injectors, spark plugs, and i was about to change even the ignition coils and gas pump! but he said he wanted to check it out first! ill let you know man.

sorry i took so long to reply i had been kinda sad about my car so i had not even thought about modding it since it is still sick.. lol hope this helped at least a little.

im wondering if you have an alternator going bad. not sure if its as prominent of problem on the V6 cars as it is on the GT. when they start going bad all kinds of problems pop up.
It sounds like un-metered air entering the intake, but without seeing the car it's only forum guesswork. Before spending a cent I'd be pulling the codes, cleaning the MAF and checking the entire induction system for air leaks.

The amount of cash people fling at a problem before paying a competent, qualified person to fix the issue always surprises me.

Alright man so i found the problem! the problem was a couple burned wires, and the battery! try checking all your stuff out to make sure they are all connected right and lookinto replacing your battery.
