I'm not sure if its been there since new, and I'm just now noticing it more (I bought it this past summer), but my 2009 GT has a faint clicking sound that follows the rpm's coming from the motor when its cold. The sound fades as the car warms up. I don't think its the usual noisy 3 valve sound that they all seem to make. The car has just 3000 miles on it. Its more noticeable with the windows closed than open. Is this common, or should I take it to the dealer to be checked?

- The injectors click
- The cam followers, etc will make a bit of noise for a while on colder days because it takes a while for the oil to get to them
- Mod motors have always suffered from a little piston slap when cold too

Um yeah, thats probably it. His car is only 4 years out of the range of cars the TSB is for.

Are you sure its coming from the engine? My car had a rattling sound that I thought was the cats breaking up and rattling. Turns out it was a dust shield on the transmission. It would only happen when I started the car up cold and increased with RPMS and then went away when the car was warmed up. Look for a thin piece of metal located between the cats. If it is missing bolts that is the problem.

Kind of like a very low volume version of what a lot of diesel engines sound like. It is more noticeable when the motor hasn't warmed up, and seems to lessen with mid grade fuel as opposed to regular.

I'm wondering if that is the same thing as what's mentioned in TSB 09-18-16. They are going to try that fix.

So what action are they going to take to fix the problem ? That TSB lists several different things they could replace, but yours' is an 09 and that TSB says 05 mustangs. It's a big difference since the heads are different and also the phaser is different.
I see this thread died out but I think I'm experiencing the same issue on my 2009. Its a light tapping? sound..if my windows are open or the radio is on at low volume it's hardly audible. Only when cold and typically on light acceleration and after 2K RPMs the engine noise seems to drown it out ( if its still there ). At normal operating temp its not there. I just noticed this winter myself ( bought the car end of '08 ). Any ideas.. anyone?

As you have read what Sqidd posted is the probable culprit. The TSB doesn't apply to your year car but it has some good info on what to tell the dealer. I would have them check it out.

I'm wondering what weight oil you are using. I have the exact same sound that you describe except mine only does it when the engine is WARM. Actually, the warmer the engine, the louder the sound.
I have already replaced the cam phaser, pulled all the followers and lifters and check them out. The noise is still there for me although the car still runs like a scalded dog. I've had the issue now for at least 6 months. I'm switched yesterday to 5W-30 and am racing the car this weekend so I'll see if that helps out.

My 2009 does somewhat of the same thing, a gentle knock that follows the rpms above 2300. Knock is felt through gearshifter and
only occurs when engine is at operating temp. Seems to get louder
as the engine warms up. No sound when cold. I did put 5w-30 in
to possibly rule out bearing issues, no inprovement. But I then realized that to rule out any bearing issues, I should try 10w-30 instead. Heavier oil at max temp.

Unlike the last two posts the noise I hear is only when she's cold which I think the guy who started this thread also complained about. It goes away when warmed up. Mine is an auto so as it lethargically shifts thru 1-2-3 and drops to like 1200 between shifts it starts tapping eventually clearing up at around 2000. I really baby this car drive it like a grandma when cold and run Motorcraft 5/20 Full Synthetic ( only 9K miles on it now ).. really disappointing to hear this crap however insignificant and of course now my ears seem to be trained on the noise. I guess I'll have to find a reputable local dealer - the dealer I bought it from no longer sells Fords ( ******* ).
Not happy with Ford, or Duncan Ford dealership.
Took it in, they dismissed the ticking. Then they applied tsb 09-18-16, and created a new problem. Noise now comes from transmission through shifter into passenger area. Dealer (Duncan Ford Mazda, Blacksburg Va.), claims transmission/shifter noise is "normal". I call ******** on that due to fact that A: it didn't sound like that new (1 year ago), and B: it didn't sound like that before they worked on it.
