Hello all,
Today, after changing the oil through Jiffy Lube, I began noticing a knock/rattle in the bottom of the engine that I haven't heard until its oil change. The first obvious thing I did was check to see if they actually put oil in it and a filter on it and its good and full. I recorded a video and the link is below to help anyone willing to listen to it themselves. It's very sequential following a definite pattern unlike other engine knocks that I'm used to on older cars. During the video, a louder pop occurred coming from the same place. The car has 75,000 on it and I just bought it a month ago. Everything checked out on its test drive and I even had it looked at prior to buying with it passing inspection. Usually when I hear this sound in an engine, I immediately think that the engine is on its way out, but since this in a sequence, I'm lost on it. Have a listen for me, if you don't mind. Any ideas? Thanks for your time.

This happened immediately after the oil change? Did you watch them do the change? This is a wild guess, but could something solid got poured in with the new oil? I would drain the oil thru a wire mesh and see if anything gets caught. Should be interesting to hear other members thoughts..

Yeah, sadly. My thinking is that they concealed the sound with a lube like Lucas or something. I drained it while screening the oil for debris but it was clean and I filed it with new oil. Same exact sound. You can't hear it while in the car or while its driving. You can only hear it while it is idle. I really hope that this isn't the start of something really bad.

Dude don't let jiffy lube put that cheap junk on your stang. First the motorcraft fl-820s oil filter is an anti-drainback filter designed to keep the oil pressure in your engine and you need an anti drain back filter on your car. Secondly you need to run 5w30 synthetic oil. So you should head to your local parts store and get a motorcraft fl-820s filter and 5 quarts of motorcraft 5w30 motor oil and see how that works for you. Alot of threads out there with people using different oil filters and getting some weird engine noises until they went back with a motorcraft fl-820s. The oil and filter you buy for your car is the life blood of your mustang so feed it the good stuff.

You know Brian I have never had an oil pump fail on me and i've only seen it happen once to someone else and it was due to running engine cleaner through a high mileage engine. It knocked all the gunk loose and ruined the oil pump. If he paid jiffy lube to change his oil and didn't supply the oil and filter than i'd imagine they used the cheap filter and oil. I have read other forums where people had taken their mustangs and had the oil changed and then experienced knocking noises and it was due to the cheap oil filter, once they replaced it the noise went away. It's hard for me to believe the car didn't sound like this until it was taken to jiffy lube and now it's making this rythmic knocking noise and it not being jiffy lubes fault. Hence why I do all my own work, you can't trust anyone with your car anymore.:banghead:

I never knew they could fail until I looked it up. It's said that's it's extremely rare, but still possible.

Wow, the oil filter??? You know, given the complexity of cars these days, I believe it. I'll change it back and listen for the results. Likely post another video for comparisons. Thanks for the replies. Great insight here. Now, I'm going to go deal with the passenger side leaking on my SJB issue that I just found about an hour ago.... It's suddenly monsoon season in TN. Go fig. :weeps

Since its not really an rpm based noise, I'm going to just go on a limb and say its not internal.. It honestly sounds like there is something bouncing around. And since he said its really only audible at idle, when the engine causes a little more vibration, that even leads me to believe its not internal more-so. Plus it's more of a tap and not a knock or a thud. If you've still got good oil pressure, its not the pump. Oil pumps don't fail, they get destroyed by foreign debris.
